USAGE interviews Michel Gabriel from GeoCat

What is the main role of GeoCat in the USAGE project?

As part of USAGE GeoCat is providing expertise about metadata, metadata catalogs and international and european (meta)data standards and technical expertise and a leading role in open source GeoSpatial software. GeoCat has provided the ‘data portal’, the technical infrastructure to support the discovery of data. This portal is called GeoCat Live (usage.geocat.live). For the USAGE project GeoCat is developing a translation service for harvested metadata, a new user friendly interface for finding your data and together with USAGE partners a new template and editor for Tools & Algorithms.

 What is Geocat.live?

GeoCat Live is is a solid Spatial Data Infrastructure to store, describe, discover and publish your data on a Software as a Service basis. It consists of GeoNetwork Enterprise, based the open source metadata catalog, GeoServer Enterprise, for serving maps and a WebDAV folder for sharing (big) data between project partners. GeoCat Live comes with GeoCat Bridge, a tool for your desktop GIS (QGIS and ESRI ArcGIS Pro) to publish your data.

How will the introduction of data spaces impact the daily operations of policy makers?

Data spaces provide policy makers with improved access to diverse data sources, enabling more informed decisions and real-time policy adjustments, ultimately leading to cost savings. By using shared data spaces, data duplication is avoided and policy makers can be sure that their data comes from an authorised source. The public can see where the data originates from, which may lead to increased trust and accountability in governmental processes.
